About Northern Nevada’s Largest Garden Railroad

How it runs!
Powered by a state-of-the-art Zimo DCC control system and showcasing locomotives and rolling stock primarily from LGB, this railroad is truly a marvel of modern engineering. The track—crafted from nickel-plated brass and supported by durable concrete landscape curbing—delivers smooth, reliable operation year-round, weather permitting.

History
The story of the Alpine & Western Pacific Railroad began around the year 2000 after I read an article about garden railroading. Inspired by the idea of bringing railroads to life in a backyard setting, I decided to build one of my own. The original railroad was called the Sierra & Kettle Valley Railroad and was located at our old home in South Reno. It was a simple loop of track about 600 feet long. It featured three tunnels, two bridges, a small pond and waterfall, and even ventured through the backyard fence to the sidewalk and back.
By 2010, the railroad was relocated to its current home in Reno, Nevada, where the tracks were expanded to span several thousand feet. Over the years, more tunnels, bridges, and water features were added, transforming the railroad into a true miniature world. The track itself is built from nickel-plated brass, resting on continuous concrete landscape curbing—a combination that ensures durability and smooth operation through the seasons.
Visit the workshop
Established in 2010, Hawley’s workshop is where imagination and craftsmanship come to life. What began as a simple passion project has grown into a creative hub where every detail of the Alpine and Western Pacific Railroad is dreamed up, designed, and built by hand.
Step inside, and you’ll find walls lined with sketches, tools, and works in progress—each piece telling its own story. The railroad’s iconic buildings are meticulously handcrafted, modeled after real locations from around the globe, and adapted to fit seamlessly into the miniature landscape. From rustic cabins and alpine chalets to bustling depots and historic landmarks, every structure reflects Hawley’s dedication to authenticity and artistry.
Together, these handcrafted details transform the railroad into more than just a track—it’s a living world, built with patience, precision, and passion.
